Road-Block BARRIERS - CALL IT WHAT IT IS!

While intended to protect cyclists, fixed bike barriers often create more safety problems than they solve. These barriers act as rigid roadblocks that prevent emergency vehicles—such as fire trucks, ambulances, and tow trucks—from navigating around stalled or stopped traffic, creating dangerous delays during critical emergencies. They also block basic city services and complicate essential tasks like street repairs, snow removal, and utility access. When delivery trucks, ride shares, or cars briefly stop in the bike lane, the barriers eliminate the flexibility for traffic to move safely around them, causing gridlock and frustration for everyone—drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians alike. Instead of enhancing safety, these barriers reduce the overall adaptability of the street system, slow emergency response times, and increase the risk of collisions in tight, mixed-use corridors. A smarter, more balanced approach—focused on shared road use, flexible enforcement, and traffic calming—would better serve all users while still protecting cyclists.
